■THE EARTH IS UNDER ATTACK !
An army of devious and disgusting alien creatures are invading our planet and terrorizing the human population! Disaster seems imminent!!
Is there really anyone left that can save humanity from the alien invasion...!?
... Yes there is!
【 THE ALIEN BUSTERS ! ! 】
▲Our heroes not-so-fancy daytime job.
Posing as simple fast-food vendors working at their mobile hot dog stand - the muscular rockabilly「GORDON」, the sexy「KARLA」, and the robot「SCOOTER」- are in reality the members of the world famous anti-alien task force unit「ALIEN BUSTERS」! ! ! (Now let's just hope their famous「Alien Burgers」aren't made of actual alien meat...)
ALIEN STORM was another excellent action game from from the creative mind of「MAKOTO UCHIDA」(内田 誠) the genius game programmer behind the legendary SEGA arcade games「JUUOUKI」(ALTERED BEAST) and「GOLDEN AXE」, as well as of the posterior masterpiece「DYNAMITE DEKA」.
With ALIEN STORM it is clear that UCHIDA-san and his staff (TEAM SHINOBI) wanted to give players a more varied and fast-paced action experience than of that offered by their previous arcade hit GOLDEN AXE. So to this end they decided to add two different types of shooting segments「3-D」and「High-Speed Scrolling」to complement the core action part.
The 3-D stages work very much like a gun shooting game where players can waste away aliens in fully destroyable environments. The high-speed scrolling stages in turn, will have players shooting the enemy and dodging obstacles in thrilling high-speed chases.
It is also worth noting that while ALIEN STORM was released overseas as a 3-player game. In Japan, just like pretty much every other multi-player arcade game, it was released exclusively as a 2-player game.
And just in case someone is wondering the reason behind this. It's because the Japanese game centers have always preferred the use of general purpose 2-player arcade cabinets over the more costly dedicated deluxe game cabinets that were commonly used in the west.
At first glance the ALIEN STORM colourful character cast may seem like just an adaptation of the GOLDEN AXE cast on a new alien setting. However, the stronger character personalities, as well as their more elaborated backgrounds, certainly put them a step above.
【 GORDON 】
・Weapons : Thunder Gun, Bazooka, Grenade ・Special : Air Support
The ALIEN BUSTER team is led by the sleek GORDON who is a former special forces member. GORDON can count on his old army buddies to deliver some heavy air support and bail him out of any「hairy situation」. 【 KARLA 】
KARLA is the only female team member so that means she often has to play the role of the「Older Sister」in spite that in reality she's just as though as GORDON (even if he himself doesn't want to admit it).
Karla can request an ICBM strike to lay waste to the alien invaders, although no one else in the team seems to know from just where that thing is coming from...
SCOOTER is a robot with some serious anger-management issues whom for some strange reason only seems to be happy while he's serving fast-food to his human customers. However, when the need arises to kick some alien scum, SCOOTER becomes a perfectly calibrated killing machine.
SCOOTER can activate the self-destruction mechanism installed on his motherboard to blow himself up and deliver a powerful blast to all enemies in the area. But while this is indeed a very useful attack, the downside is that most of the earnings from the hot dog stand are used towards buying more spare body parts...
■HOW TO PLAY
・8-WAY Joystick... Player's movement ・A Button... Attack ・B Button... Roll ・C Button... Special Attack (consumes energy gauge)
● You can run by double tapping the joystick left or right.
While running you can perform a dash attack with the [ A ] button or jump with the [ B ] button. Pushing the [ A ] button while jumping will allow you to do a more advanced type of jump attack.
● The [ B ] button lets you perform a rolling maneuver that can be used to escape danger. You can also do a rolling attack by pushing the [ A ] button while rolling.
● The [ C ] button lets you unleash your character's「Special Attack」which can heavily damage all enemies on screen. Each character has a different looking special attack, but they all have the same effect and power. Special attacks will use a good amount of your「Energy Gauge」which can be restored by collecting the「E」power-ups.
Clearing a mission will also reward you with extra energy accordingly to how many aliens you defeated.
As a member of the ALIEN BUSTERS it will be your job to defeat the hordes of ugly-as-hell alien creatures that are currently wreaking havoc throughout the city.
To make matters worse, the latest reports say the aliens are already beginning to assimilate their unwilling human hosts and thus are drastically increasing in numbers!
The aliens are disguising themselves as trees, trash cans, mail boxes, telephone booths, vending machines, and just about everything they can use in order to surprise the helpless humans who are falling prey of their vicious attacks even as we speak!
「It's all up to you ALIEN BUSTERS to stop the alien invasion ! ! !」
The aliens are holding a young woman hostage inside a convenience store. Head over there immediately and rescue her!
This mission will be short and easy so your only priority will be getting used to the controls and avoid getting hit. The aliens disguised as trash cans and vending machines can throw stuff at you if you let them, although these attacks are rather weak. The aliens can also grab you if you get close to them, so try not to.
Once inside the convenience store you will get into the first 3-D stage. Special attacks can't be used in this part, but you can stock up on「E」power-ups by destroying the stuff on the background.
Aliens are on the loose inside an electronic goods store downtown. Hurry and stop them from stealing our precious entertainment technology!
The alien invaders will start getting more numerous, although overall this will be another relatively easy mission.
Stage 2 will throw you into the first high-speed scrolling stage. During this part the screen will auto-scroll to the right and characters will be in an auto-run mode. You still will be able to move in all 8 directions, use special attacks, and jump with the [ B ] button.
The electronic goods store is filled with references to other popular SEGA games which can be seen on the many screen monitors around. It's almost a shame you will be destroying them all... oh well! (^^;
The SEGA games that being showcased on the monitors are: GOLDEN AXE, ALTERED BEAST, SHADOW DANCER, MONACO GP, FLASH POINT and CRACK DOWN.
The enemy has completely overrun the industrial zone. ALIEN BUSTERS get there immediately and kick the aliens out of the area!
The plant-like aliens on the ground can be stunned but not destroyed, so don't bother with them. Also, be careful with the long-armed aliens since they can grab you and toss you into the air for a relevant amount of damage.
This mission has two 3-D stages and one high-speed scrolling stage - All of which will be substantially more challenging than in the previous missions. In this mission you will also be fighting one of the two alien bosses present in the game, so try to save as much of your energy gauge as possible for the upcoming fight.
The alien boss can morph himself into three different forms. His first and third forms are actually very easy to beat since they have very predictable attack patterns. The second form however, is the one that you should be concerned with. So if you have a good amount of energy gauge stored, it'll be a lot better to defeat him with special attacks only.
If you don't have enough energy to defeat the second form this way though. A good alternative tactic is to remain close to the boss doing continuous dash attacks (basically running back and forth through him). This way you should be able to hit the boss 3 to 4 times for every hit you will take back from him.
The alien's UFO has appeared it! Intercept it and destroy it before it lands!!
Don't stand in the way of the big alien chasing the terrified crowd at the beginning of the mission, since for some reason you won't be able to hit him.
Note that from this mission on the aliens will becoming faster and more aggressive, so if you haven't already, this will be a good time to start using your dash and jump attacks more frequently.
The alien's UFO is actually the second enemy boss and you will be fighting it in a high-speed scrolling stage. The fight itself is pretty simple so you shouldn't have any problems.
Once you've damaged it enough, the UFO will crash down giving you the chance to finish the job and blow it sky high.
Before you can board it though, you will have to defeat the last wave of desperate alien invaders.
Finally, once inside the UFO you will engage in the longest 3-D stage in the game. Although the stage itself is actually easier than the previous warehouse one from stage 2.
Oh no! You've been abducted by the alien's mothership!!
This is it! Now's the time to show those alien freaks they've just messed with the wrong species! We're counting on you, ALIEN BUSTERS!!
During these last two missions you will have to make your way deeper into the alien mothership by going through a series of tunnels. If you follow the recommended route explained here, you should be able to clear both stages fast and with minimal fighting.
Take the RIGHT path and you will go into a short and narrow corridor filled with plant aliens. From there take the LEFT path to go into a 3-D stage. Beat it and you will clear the mission.
Starting this mission, and granted that you've followed the recommended path above, this will be the only action stage where you will be dealing with the elite alien troops.
These disgusting kangaroo-like creatures can do a lot of damage and have annoying long range attacks, so be really careful.
Once all of the elite aliens have been taken care of, take the LEFT path to fight the alien boss from Mission 3 again. You can use the same tactics from before to defeat him, although this time around the fight should be easier since the boss has considerable less HP.
After the boss has been disposed, take the RIGHT path to enter another narrow pathway with minimal enemy presence. Follow it and you will end up in the final stage of the game.
【 FINAL BOSS : MOTHER BRAIN 】 There are two ways to beat the final stage :
1. Destroy the mother brain to end the fight.
2. Destroy all of the alien defenders and afterwards the mother brain will explode on its own.
It's advisable to focus on taking down aliens rather than attempting to destroy the mother brain right away. You should be able to take less hits this way, and also get a better rating.
With its brain destroyed, the mother ship explodes and our heroes are shown drifting aimlessly in space inside a safety bubble.
Fortunately, they are rescued shortly afterwards by their mobile hot-dog stand that surprisingly is also a spaceship.
And then finally we will get to see the funky staff roll showcasing the trademark SEGA humour of the period. (^^;
Unlike the majority of arcade action games, ALIEN STORM doesn't feature a conventional score system.
Instead, a group of 5 intergalactic judges will evaluate your performance and give you a rating accordingly to how well they think you kicked the aliens behind throughout the game.
A pretty awesome and unique rating system indeed.
Among the judges we can spot our friend「GILIUS THUNDERHEAD」from the GOLDEN AXE series, who happily took the time to come by just to rate your playing skill. (^^;
It's important to note that for rating your performance the judges will only take into account your current life. So if at some point in the game you lost and decided to continue, your past rating will be lost and another one will start from that point.
